This famous collection of short stories by Liam Ó Flaithearta was first published in 1953 and is his only collection of stories in Irish. They are all situated in the west of Ireland and contain vivid descriptions of the rugged countryside and memorable characters.
The reviews written about Dúil shortly after its publication were negative in tone and it is said that this criticism discouraged Ó Flaithearta from writing in Irish again. Dúil has been reprinted many times since the Fifties, however, and Galway-based publisher Cló Iar-Chonnacht has recently published the latest edition. This undoubtedly shows that Irish language readers don’t share the literary critics’ view of the book.
